Pit Bull Adoption – Why So Many Pit Bulls Are Orphans

Pit Bull Adoption

Pit bull adoption seems to be rare. It seems that it is rare to go to an animal shelter, and not see any pit bulls. I have gone to the Humane Society of Western Montana a number of times, and there have always been a number of pit bulls living there. Currently, there are four pit bull/pit bull mix dogs listed on the Humane Society of Western Montana’s website http://myhswm.org/adopt/dogs-puppies/P15#animals. The dogs pictured are the dogs that are currently residing at the Humane Society of Western Montana. Visit their website to learn more. This is not the only pit bull adoptionpit bull adoptionpit bull adoption

animal shelter that has a number of pit bulls waiting, and hoping to be adopted. Why is this? Why are so many pit bulls not being adopted from animal shelters?

I am not sure why there are so many pit bulls that are not being adopted from animal shelters. I decided to do some research on this question and this is what I found:

  • Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40% of whom are Pit Bulls.
    •  This is a very sad statistic that I found. Why are 40% of these dogs pit bulls?
  • Overpopulation
    • Pit bulls are becoming more and more popular each year. More and more people are breeding Pit bulls.
  • Breed specific laws
    • Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) bans or restricts certain types of dogs based on their appearance because they are considered “dangerous.”
    • Montana has a number of BSL bans and restriction on Pit bulls.
    • Baker, Libby, and Lincoln County all have bans on Pit bulls.
    • Many other states have bans and restrictions against Pit bulls. Some of these states include Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyonming, North Dakota, Wisconson, Michigan, Ohio and more. Click here to see bans and/or resrictions in your area.
  • Pit bull prejudice
    • The bans and restrictions on Pit bulls are prejudice. People think they are dangerous because of the violent acts that a small number Pit bulls committed. Pit bulls are not the only violent dog. They should not be considered dangerous.

To sum things up: Too many Pit bulls are killed. Too many Pit bulls are being bread. Laws against Pit bulls make owning Pit bulls for some people impossible or very difficult. People are prejudice against Pit bulls.

The next time you go to adopt a dog, please consider adopting a Pit bull; do not discriminate against them because of the rumors, and prejudices their are against them.
